Increase in commercial charcoal production during covid-19 lockdown

Under the cover of the ongoing public health measures including lockdown aimed at combating the spread of COVID-19, we are noticing increase in the commercial production of Charcoal in Adjumani district, Pakelle and Itirikwa Sub-Counties are the hotspots, as seen in this picture taken by our grassroot activist on Tuesday, 22, June, 2021 at Nyabila in Itirikwa Sub-County.

The perpetrators are taking the advantage of the blanket waiver on Cargo to produce large amount of Charcoal and transport their consignment in containers mounted trucks, this is happening against a district council resolutions that banned commercial harvest and transportation of charcoal in and out of the jurisdiction of Adjumani District Local Government.

We ask stakeholders, to be vigilant to halt this trend, we continue to ask of Adjumani district authorities to put words into action inorder to reverse the current upsurge in the commercial charcoal production, transportation in and out of the district, let’s protect nature, for it to serve us better.
